The great mansions of Paradise Valley and Scottsdale are the winter residences of some of the world’s wealthiest people. Inevitably some of the impressive works of fine art hanging in these stately homes have to be sold to settle estates.
Paintings with firmly established provenances are typically sent to Sotheby’s or Christie’s. What we offer are the pieces that are left – those with only partial provenances due to passing through two or three inheritances such that memories fade and receipts are lost. Most of them appear to be either authentic originals or excellent copies that the owners and their guests thought were real.
We receive such pieces on consignment and are usually asked to sell them quickly so executors can finish settling the estates they are administering. Accordingly, we always submit all offers both for individual pieces and for groups of pieces. An example of the great estates from which they come from can be seen at www.phgmag.com/mediterranean-masterpiece.
In essence, we run a “yard sale” for fine art coming out of large estates. We make no warrantees or representations of any kind regarding the authenticity of any piece or the validity of any appraisals, certificates of authentication, verso stamps and certificates, signatures, dates, or any other documents or reports that their owners or executors may have made available to us. What we do warrant is that almost every piece hung in one of these great homes.
Such impressive original oil paintings with partial provenances tend to sell for pennies on the dollar because there are no “authentication experts” left willing to tell Sotheby’s that a piece is real for fear of a lawsuit if forensics tests prove them wrong. But the forensics of carbon dating and facial recognition is moving ahead rapidly and will sooner or later enable paintings to be identified to the satisfaction of Sotheby’s and Christies such that their value increases a hundred-fold.
Accordingly, a purchase of original works of art consigned from a great estate or collection can be a good investment if you can wait for the forensics to arrive and buy them while they are sufficiently inexpensive. In the interim you will have beautiful works of art that you and your guests can enjoy. Please make an offer if you see a piece or pieces that you fancy. We will arrange the packing, shipping, and insurance for you. All the pieces we offer may be viewed by appointment at our Scottsdale gallery or, in some cases, in the mansions in which they still hang.
